At least some still have pride in the Euro! Frakfurt, Germany.
A really impressive new shopping center in Frankfurt.
California, Europe
One of the things I love (selfishly, of course being from there) is Europe’s fascination with California. So many places throughout the continent are named for the American state, from tapas bars to used clothing stores. The upside for me: whenever I tell someone I’m from California on that side of the Atlantic, I’m invariably greeted with “oohs and aahs.” Then again they probably think our state is just wine bars and beaches.
Frankfurt’s skyline — an interesting mix of new and old, business and religion.
Frankfurt’s U-Bahn
Eurotrip Day 1: Frankfurt
Though i hadn’t slept for about 24 hours when I arrived in Frankfurt, i believe the best way to beat jet lag is to fight it, so i hit the ground running. For my first day I grabbed an U-Bahn day-pass and simply hopped on and off at will exploring any stop that either looked or sounded interesting. I explored the old church, walked along the river constantly crossing the numerous bridges to get the view from both sides (fair and balanced), and visited the original German parliament building from the 1800’s. The highlight, though was definitely the bizarre experience of eating at an Imbuss which it turned out was next to an “erotische club” which was playing M.I.A.’s song “paper planes” in German. A good reminder, as if I needed one, that I wasn’t in Washington, D.C. anymore!
Now, well rested and filled with German snacks, I’m on the train from Frankfurt to Cologne passing through the beautiful German countryside. My jet lag, and my snack next to an erotic club now in the rear-view mirror, I’m officially ready for my next German adventures.
