In Praise of University of Texas Fans

I have never been to a road game as a UCLA fan where I met classier fans than at the University of Texas.  Perhaps I’ve become jaded by going to too many USC games where we’ve had stuff — both physical items and ugly slurs — thrown our way, but my friends and I were absolutely blown away by how wonderful the UT fans were.

It all started the night of our arrival out on 6th street.  People were going out of their way to come up to us, welcome us, and make sure we were having a good time (“everyone treatin’ y’all well so far?).  The fans praised us for having a good number of UCLA fans make the trip out to Austin (it’s an awesome place — can you blame us?), and offering to help with recommendations or anything else we needed.

On gameday, we were welcomed into tailgates as if we were wearing burnt orange instead of True Blue, and people wanted to chat with us about our school, California, and the (ridiculously hot) weather that day.

Before the game started, the Texas band, in one of the classiest moves I’ve seen, welcomed the UCLA fans in attendance by playing our Alma Mater (I’d post the video, but you’d mostly just hear me and my friends singing it incredibly off-key).

Following the game, where UCLA pulled off a huge upset, we were bracing ourselves for some razzing — but instead we found the complete opposite.  Total strangers were congratulating us and even offering us high-fives.  Fans went out of their way to say what a great game UCLA played and multiple people even told us “have a great time — you guys run Austin tonight!”  They were so nice, it was almost surreal; despite it being a really tough loss for them, they went out of their way to be so incredibly gracious.

Here’s to you, University of Texas fans, for being some of the classiest I’ve ever met.

About

Avatar I'm a social entrepreneur, travel writer, and picture taker. I've been swimming with baby penguins in the Galapagos, visited rat temples in India, survived an overnight train in Moscow, jumped out of a plane strapped to a guy in a leather helmet, penned a thesis on new media and elections, competed in a POGs tournament, discussed social entrepreneurship at the White House, traveled on everything from a ferry to a camel in search of adventure, and, most importantly, attended every home basketball game while a student at UCLA.
