Inside the Secret World of Trader Joe's
Check out this illuminating piece by Fortune magazine on hands down my favorite grocery store: Trader Joe’s. The article is a good balance of prose describing the Trader Joe’s experience and analysis of the business model. For example, on TJ’s limited selection:
“Studies have found that buyers enjoy purchases more if they know the pool of options isn’t quite so large…Customers accept that Trader Joe’s has only two kinds of pudding or one kind of polenta because they trust that those few items will be very good.”
Though it sheds some light on the store’s infamous secrecy regarding vendors, it only reaffirms why — despite living right next to a competitor — I take a 15-minute metro ride and walk half-a-mile with groceries to go to the Trader Joe’s here in DC.

“Employees dress in goofy trademark Hawaiian shirts” = my father. It’s been the greatest thing ever, being raised on TJS.

I shop there often too, but I’m not a big fan of their HR practices.

I love TJs. And yes, I too always forget to take my little granny cart when I go so I end up lugging bags of groceries up New Hampshire!
