For those of you interested in international development, you should definitely check out the most recent episode of the AshokaTECH Podcast: my interview with Martin Fisher, the cofounder of Kickstart. In it we talk about the work he is doing in Africa bringing simple technological advances to rural farmers — helping them become more efficient and effective at their work and as a result...

Monkeying Around in Udaipur →
Thanks so much to Steph from Twenty-SomethingTravel.com for sharing my most recent ridiculous travel writing about my adventures at a Jewelry store in India. My buddy was looking to buy a monkey figurine, but it turned out to be an “erotic monkey statue,” so some surgery had to be performed on its “Curious George,” and then craziness ensued. Check out her site for the...

Public service is a calling. I truly believe that.
– -Congressman Jeff Fortenberry, (R-NE)
Last night I had the opportunity to attend a Georgetown “policy dinner” with Congressman Jeff Fortenberry a 1986 graduate of GPPI. It was a great experience to meet with a representative in such an intimate setting, and I was very impressed with...

Tumblr Asks Part I
Thanks for your questions and messages submitted through the awesome Tumblr Ask feature! A few of the questions I’ve received, and my answers:
This is Alisha asked: “What’s the best empanada you’ve ever had?”
A very important question! After spending a quarter in DC during undergrad 2 blocks from Julia’s Empanadas, I have to say that I go to Julia for all of...

Should Kids Be Bribed to Do Well in School? →
Time has an interesting article about Harvard Economics Professor Roland Fryer Jr.’s experiment to see if paying children for performance in school results in better outcomes. This case, in my opinion, brings up three important issues surrounding policy making and education:
-Try something! Analyze it. If it doesn’t work, try something else! Policymakers and leaders are often too...

Worst Job Posting Ever
So with graduation looming, I’m spending a lot of time reading job descriptions on Idealist, Jobs.Change.org, Georgetown’s listings, and other job sites. I have yet to come across a less-interesting, more make-me-want-to-kill-myself-instead-of-apply job requirement than this one:
“The employee must have the ability to maintain acceptable standards of office conduct; the ability...

Guttenfelder’s iPhone Photos →
Further proving that it’s not the camera it’s the photographer, check out this photoset by AP Photographer David Guttenfelder. He took all of the shots, including the one below, with his iPhone — resulting in one of the most captivating series I’ve ever seen. Not bad for the device I send text messages and play shuffle board on.

10 mobile apps for social good →
SocialBrite put together a great list of 10 mobile apps for social good. Mobile apps are clearly the future of computing, so to see such a robust offering of ways to do good from your phone this early on gives me a lot of optimism for where we’ll be years from now.
My personal favorite, for obvious reasons, is The Extraordinaries, though I wish they had also included Citysourced.
Do you...
